125,000 killed every year

Dr Saraswathi is not the only victim of road accident in India;  the following is the shocking facts;

Every two minutes, one person dies from the road accidents in India and 2,50,000 road accidents occur every year. Of those 2,50,000 accidents , 125,000 people die. The other 1,25,000 people sustain serious injuries and end up having disability. When the accident happens, there is a long delay before the medical help arrives.

India has 1% of the world motor vehicles; yet, it accounts for 10% of road accidents deaths as these roads are narrow and more cars are purchased every year.

With the numbers of vehicles in India increasing at a rapid rate, Road Traffic Accidents are set to continue to pose a major threat for the future of many. Also, significant proportion of deaths around 75%, occur in the economically-active young adult group. Contributory factors to the high mortality rates include;

  • Speeding
  • Drink driving
  • Low use of helmets, seat belts and child restraints in vehicles
